Room 2 Kindergarten Mrs. P. Prestidge
Our year is rolling along! Students are working hard on letter and sound recognition. Assessment on these and other skills is ongoing so be sure to work with your child regularly using the cards we've already sent home. Our daily review includes singing a song by Miss Jenny. We use pictures while we sing each letter and the sound it makes. This helps students get the information in many ways at the same time.
We also sing our high frequency or sight words. So far we have learned the songs for: the, here, is, an, see, we, and, she, and he. Ask your student to sing the songs for you. We add about one new song or word each week. These words are needed to read the predecodable books that come home regularly. Is your student reading the books at least once a week? Be sure he/she points to each word as they read the book to you. That way we know the student recognizes and reads the words and is not just memorizing. We also use these words in our strip books, the little stapled books where students stamp a picture on each page. Be sure to list these books on your students monthly reading log so we can win a visit from Sharky! Did you know we are writing sentences in our journals using these words? When we write sentences we practice word identification and spelling, capitalization, punctuation and spacing. It's truly amazing what we do in Kindergarten now!
In math we have finished chapters on shapes and sorting and classifying. Students have learned that the grown-up term for diamond is rhombus. We also learned the geometric shapes: sphere, cube, cone, and cylinder. In sorting we practiced this skill with our pumpkins as well as making and sorting paper buttons. We are now working on patterns and left and right (the hand stamps sure help with this skill!) Help your child find patterns in clothing and other places around your home. Along with these skills, we will also soon be assessing students on their ability to identify and write numbers to 10.
We truly appreciate all the help and support we receive from our families. Be sure to read the weekly newsletter that comes home every Friday. If you ever have any questions, feel free to call (656-6438 Ext.41302), drop by or send a note. We appreciate your input and feedback. Keep in mind that our first trimester ends the second week in November and you will receive your student's report card at a conference.shortly after that. I am available to meet before school, after school, and evenings before the regular conference times during Thanksgiving week. Let me know if you would like to meet at a special time.
