2007/2008 School Year

Hello Parents, welcome to the new school year:

To the parents that attended Back to School Night, thank you very much for coming. To those that were unable to attend, I look forward to meeting you during the school year. I hope that the Back to School packet answers questions you may have. If you still have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me in person or by phone.

Now that we are in the second full week of school, you should be seeing homework coming home every night, Monday through Thursday. Nightly homework consists of reading for 30 minutes, and writing a Quickwrite, which is three to four sentences about the story or book your child read, on the sheet they receive each Monday entitled, "Reading Record;" a math assignment; a spelling assignment; and on Monday, a vocabulary assignment. Occasionally you will also see a social studies or science assignment.

Please try to provide your child with a daily homework time and give them assistance as needed. Be aware that when they come to school with missing or incomplete homework, they do suffer consequences in the form of a lost recess and no Friday free P.E. time. All homework that I assign is to reinforce what they have learned in class. I try never to give just "busy work."

Mathathon has started this week. Please look for the information packet if you have not already seen it. This is our only fundraiser where the money goes directly to the teacher. I really depend on it, as I use it to offset the cost of fieldtrips and to purchase various supplies which are not provided by the school. However, this year, I will mainly use it to buy reading books for the classroom, as the majority of my books are for fifth and sixth graders. Mathathon will run from September 18 through October 12. The test will be given in class on September 26. The scored tests will be returned home on September 28. Donations should be collected from October 1 through October 5 and returned to the classroom. The student that collects the most money will receive a pizza lunch with the principal and the top two money collectors will receive a gift certificate to their favorite store/restaurant/etc.

Progess Reports will be going home in mid October. If your child is not doing well academically at that time, there is still time for grades to improve by the first trimester report card in November. Therefore, if you have concerns when you receive you child's Progress Report, please check the box that says, "I request a conference." If your child is doing well, you will not receive a progress report.

ALL parents will be scheduled for a conference in November when the report card comes out. I look forward to meeting with you at that time.

Sincerely, Mrs. Benedetti
