Textbook
Glencoe, California Mathematics: Concepts, Skills, and Problem Solving, Grade 7.

Materials
Every student should come to class everyday prepared with a 3-ring binder, dividers or folders, binder paper(loose leaf and spiral notebook), graph paper, assignment book, pencils, mini pencil sharpener or extra lead, erasers, red pens, colored pencils, mini-stapler, staples, and a ruler.

Assignment Books
•Students will write homework in the school assignment books daily before leaving class. This way you will always know what they have to do for homework every night. If you are not seeing this happen, please encourage your son or daughter to start keeping track of their assignments. Organization is key to the success of middle school students.
•You will be able to check the accuracy of these assignments by logging onto the school website (www.hornerjh.com) nightly.

Classroom Rules
•Be respectful of others thoughts, ideas, and personal items.
•Raise your hand and wait to be recognized before contributing to class.
•All work for this class should be: Neat, Complete, and On Time.
•The teacher, not the bell or the time on the clock, will dismiss class at the end of each period.

Daily Procedures
•Warm-up exercises (5-minute check) to be done upon entering classroom.
•Correct warm-up and homework from previous night and address questions
concerning them. Collect Homework.
•Introduce new topic.
•Do guided practice activities in class.
•Opportunity for individual practice in class and in the form of homework.

Homework
•Homework will be assigned nightly, Monday through Friday, which should take about 30 minutes each night. (Yes, this means there will be homework over the weekend.)
•All class work and homework should be kept in the binder and brought to class daily.
•Homework will be graded daily based on a five point scale (proper heading, assignment written, work shown, and corrected in red pen).

Problem-of-the-Week
•A two-sided worksheet given on Monday and collected the following Monday. One side will have a problem revolving around a specific career and how that career uses math. The other side will be an enrichment or challenge problem(s) from a section in the book that we have already discussed.
•Work should be shown on binder paper and attached to the worksheet. Unlike the nightly homework, this assignment will be grade on accuracy, not just on completion.

Tests
•Tests will be given at the completion of each chapter.
•The night before the test, students will be given a practice test in order to prepare them for the test. Answers will be posted on the Horner website so students can check their own work and find their mistakes prior to taking the test.
•After returning the graded Test, students will be expected to correct their mistakes in the form of the Test Rework, which will be graded as a test.
•Students will also be given a test at the end of each unit, which is roughly every 3 chapters.

Grading
•Homework (Daily) -- 40%
Each assignment is graded on a 5-point scale.
Heading, Assignment written, Work completed,
Work shown, and Corrected in RED pen.
•Problem of the Week (Weekly) 10%
Graded based on accuracy. Points vary depending on the week.
•Chapter Tests (roughly every 3 weeks) -- 50%
Unit Tests (roughly every 2 chapters)
Rework Tests (Completed after EVERY Test taken)

How can I help my son or daughter be successful in math class this year?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Homework
•Eliminate distractions while your student is completing his or her homework.
•Set aside a regular time and place for your student to work.
•Review daily concepts with student and monitor that homework is being completed on a nightly basis.
•Help students with concepts when needed, encourage that they visit me before or after school, and/or encourage them to attend the after school tutorial or homework club.
•Use the Extra Examples, Personal Tutor, and Self-Check Quizzes available online for each section in the book at www. ca.gr7math.com .
•Check for updated grades on-line to ensure that assignments are being turned in daily.

Tests
•Be sure that they are keeping up with their studies.
•Start reviewing the week before the test. Look over old assignments, tests, and try to complete the Chapter Reviews and Tests in the book.
•Take advantage of the Chapter Resources available online at www.ca.gr7math.com such as the Chapter Test, Concepts in Motion, and Vocabulary Review.
•Help students complete the Practice Test the night before the quiz and check the answers on-line to make sure of understanding.
•Encourage your student to take their time when taking the test by carefully looking over their answers and solutions a second time. Coming in at lunch or after school is always available if the need more time to finish.
•Your student should be reworking the tests in order to figure out his or her mistakes and help improve his or her score.

Working Together
•Please feel free to email or call me if you have any questions about what we’re covering or what your student is responsible for. I would enjoy working with you to help your student be a successful student.
