Green Sheet
Mr. Padron's Life Science Course Expectations
Welcome to an exciting year in your educational endeavors. The aim of this class is to show you the world of science in a different way, to both excite and challenge the student, and most important to provide a safe and cofortable learning environment.
Class Organization
ASSESMENT
Students will be assessed through an array of avenues:
Student's progress and uderstanding will be asses using lecture notebooks, class projects, homeworks, exams, discussions, laboratories, activities, lab reports, group work, and class work.
.Class work/Homework:(30% of total grade)
Class assignments require more time to complete than is alloted during class time, threfore it is considered homework. Students will complete classroom assignments on Thursday evenings to be submitted on Fridays. This method allows parents to overlook and assist the students learning process.
.Exams/Quizzes/Pop-Quizzes:(30%of total grade)
Tests will be given to assess students comprehension of the subject material covered.
There will be various methods of assessing student concept learning and comprehension, from multiple-choice, tests, quiz reviews, discussions, projects, and whole class exams in which the whole class contributes to the learning environment.
.Science Notebook:
Spiral science notebooks will be a key element for success in the class. This tool will serve as a study tool for the student, and means of communication for the parent to observe what is covered in class, and an assessment piece that will be graded without notice. On occasion, lecture notes, text notes,or any information gathered by the student in the notebook, can be used for exams or quizzes when notified by the teacher. It is imperative that the student remains updated on the notebook and most important that the student brings a notebook to class everyday!
.Maintaining A Positive Learning Environment & Responsibility
Every student deserves the right to a safe, comfortable and positive learning environment. Students must practice self-control and exhibit the ability to modify their behavior. Should the learning flow of the class be disrupted by a student, affecting the learning process for themselves and others, the student's grade will be affected.

COMMITMENT
Responsibility and personal commitment are highly valued in the class. It is expected that each student gives their best effort for all assignments, exams, discussions and invest their best interests to all activities of the class. "If you believe that you will not succeed, you are right, and if you believe you will succeed, you are right" -Theodore Roosevelt. How much you commit yourself to your education, is what you will get out of the class.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
Everyone deserves a safe, active, and positive learning environment; therefore the following are expectations from students:
1. Respect yourself, the teacher and fellow colleagues.
2. Be in your seat when the bell rings.
3. Raise your hand and wait to be called on to share with the class.
4. No profanity; inappropriate behavior and language is not tolerated.
5. Monitor your own behavior, you know right from wrong, do the right thing.

CONSEQUENCES
Violations to the above expectations will result with a verbal warning from the teacher. Should the behavior persist the student will be removed from the class. Depending on the severity, the student may be referred to the administration, and parents may be notified to monitor the behavior, should the student not have difficulties managing their own behavior.

MATERIALS
The following are required at all times during science class:
2 Pencils
2 Pens
Science Notebook
Lined Paper
Ruler
Color Pencils (optional)
Students will not be allowed to borrow these items from other students, you must have these before you come into class.

GRADING
The students will be graded on a point percentage system:
90-100%=A,80-89%=B,70-79%=C,60-69%=D,59% and below=F

In order for a student to earn an A in the class, the student must exceed the class recommendations, by doing more than is expected on a continual basis. For example, a student may submit a report on a subject or concept taught in class or that it maybe a scientific topic of interest to the student. Students who meet the requirements of the class, and who excel by raising their own standards can be recommended to earn an A in the class.

Late, missing or incomplete work. Late assignments will not be accepted.
If absent, it is the responsibility of the student to ask other students, check the "absent folder" for missing assignments, and check at hornerjh.com for all homework missed. All homework is submitted on Fridays. Have your work ready to turn in a neat and orderly fashion. The assignments should be neat, legible, professionally presented, and not wrinkled, otherwise the assignment will not be accepted and no credit will be granted.

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS RETURN THE FUNDRAISER ENVELOPE WITH THE RECORD SHEETS, MONEY AND CHECKS ON MONDAY SO THAT WE CAN BEGIN ORDERING THE ITEMS FROM THE APPLE COMPANY. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP.

DEAR PARENTS, WE ARE DOING EXPERIMENTS IN CLASS. WE WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR HELP WITH SOME MATERIALS NECESSARY FOR THESE EXPERIMENTS.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
WHITE VINEGAR, YOGURT, PLASTIC CUPS, RAW EGGS (DELIVER IN THE MORNING TO ROOM 13 TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS), SOIL FOR PLANTS, BEANS FOR GROWTH OBSERVATIONS, TEST TUBES TO OBSERVE LAYERS OF CHEMICALS, AND TO PERFROM WATER TESTS, FOOD COLORING FOR FOSSIL FORMATIONS, EPSON SALT TO MAKE PETRIFIED FOSSILS, PLASTER OF PARIS TO MAKE CASTS OF FOSSILS. WE GREATLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP. A LOT OF THESE MATERIALS ARE USUALLY PURCHASED BY THE TEACHERS SINCE THE SCHOOL BUDGET DOES NOT ALLOW BUDGET MONEY TO BE USED FOR CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION. THANK YOU.

Dear Parents,
We are now studying the Theory of Evolution through the process of Natural Selection and Adaptation. We are following the recommendations from State and National Standards to teach the Science Course, especially when we teach the Theory of Evolution. Should you choose your child an alternative course of study deviant from The Theory of Evolution, they can be assigned independent study in the library where they will study Fungus and Protists during the time period required for the class to complete this section of our study. Thank you for your understanding.

d) What I want from myself this school year is..... (2things)
e) Tht I expect from my science teacher and the class are.... (3 things)
f) What I like to do on my spare time is.....

2) Organization of the Living World

Please Note The following information is from the previous year. Some of this may be used for this year at an undetermined time since I am changing the order of how the textbook will be covered. We will begin on chapter 7, living things and work our way to cells and then Geentics. It is a Macro to Micro approach. I hope it will make sense to students if the curriculum is organized in such fashion. Thank you, Padron.

Notice: The Cell Model is not due yet. The Cell Model is a 3-Dimensional model of the cell using scrap materials around your household that you no longer need. Be sure to include a key that represents the organelles of the cell. You can make an Animal or Plant Cell.

NOF's: Many students received notice of failures since the first exam 3/4 of the students did not perform well. We succeeded by reviewing the same material and focusing on our mistakes. A new and longer exam was prepared and 65% of the students improved, therefore their grades have increased since the last notice sent home. The students were notified of their grade change. I can redistribute their new grade and send a notice home with my signature, just have the student write a letter requesting their grade, signed and dated by parent with student's full name and period. I will be more than happy to notify the parents and students of our grade improvement. Thank you for your support and understanding regarding this matter.

As for Science Reports, parents have asked for an extension. I cannot provide an extension since grades are due in less than 2 weeks after the report is due, that will not give me enough time to grade and enter grades. The report was assigned over a month ago, and it is optional. Another report is due in January after our Christmas break, and that is also optional. The purpose of the report is for students to learn and perform beyond what is expected in the class. Albeit the report is optional, students who have an A in class must submit a report in order to obtain the A in their quarter grade as mentioned before, assuming the report is written to its compoleteness, professionally and in an acceptable manner.
