Introduction to Spanish
Señora Mazer One Semester
This is an action-based course designed to acquaint first-time learners of Spanish with vocabulary, question and sentence formation, units on the body, clothing, school, family, foods and animals. In addition, cultural activities will be interwoven to introduce the students to Hispanic culture. Music, educational films, art and cooking are examples of what will be included. Students will research a country where Spanish is the primary language. There are both oral and written components to this project.
Late work is accepted one week past the due date and will receive half credit.
Attendance: Attendance is crucial to the development of concepts in Spanish. It is during class that students will be expected to actively participate in the exercises, therefore making it impossible to make up. Each student receives ten points daily that add up to 25% OF THEIR TOTAL GRADE. Students will lose these points if they are not following the rules.
Classwork and Homework: Assignments will consist of follow-up activities to the classroom instruction. They may consist of listening, writing, memorizing specific vocabulary, reading a specific article, watching a program on television and reporting back to the class orally and/or in writing. This is worth 25% of their grade.
Materials and Projects: Students are expected to provide their own materials and be prepared in class. Being prepared for class means that they must have binder paper or a notebook, pens and pencils, crayons, markers or colored pencils, glue or glue stick. For projects, Sra. Mazer will provide many of the supplies, but donations will be asked for in some instances. Projects are worth 25% of their grade.
Tests: Tests will be announced before they are given; and students will have ample time to ask questions and study beforehand. Tests will be worth 25% of their grade.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call me at 656-4000, extension 48027, or send an email to lmazerlev@mail.fremont.k12.ca.us.
Spanish 1
Señora Mazer One Year
Using the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, the students will communicate about daily life, everyday activities, hobbies, school, entertainment, weather, time, sports, family, and friends. Students will progress from using memorized language to creating original conversational and written exchanges. Language learned will reflect the customs, attitudes, and values characteristic of that Spanish speaking country. Countries covered in the Spanish 1 book will be: United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain and Ecuador.
Textbook: En Español 1

It is during class that students will be expected to actively participate in the exercises, therefore making it impossible to make up. Homework: Assignments will consist of follow-up activities to the classroom instruction. They may consist of listening, writing, memorizing specific vocabulary, reading a specific article, watching a program on television and reporting back to the class orally and/or in writing. Most of the homework will be out of the Más Práctica Workbook and will be approximately six pages per chapter. This is worth 15% of their grade.
Notebook: A heavy-duty spiral notebook is required for this class. Sra. Mazer suggests one that has at least 100 pages and has a plastic cover. In this notebook, students will take notes on art, grammar and complete class exercises. These notebooks are collected at the end of each quarter and Sra. Mazer will randomly choose certain things to evaluate. These notebooks should be kept for future reference in Spanish 2. The students receive one grade and this is worth 15% of their grade.
Projects: Projects may be as simple as introducing yourself to the class in Spanish and showing a poster of your family tree. There will be one or two projects per quarter. By the end of the year, students will be able to write a five paragraph essay in Spanish. Projects are worth 10% of the grade. Quizzes: Quizzes are given before tests and make up 15% of the grade. Quizzes are usually announced, but Sra. Mazer reserves the right to quiz when necessary.
Tests: Tests will be announced before they are given; and students will have ample time to ask questions and study beforehand. Tests will be worth 25% of their grade.
