Athletes are issued the school uniform for free but if lost or damaged, replacement value is $100. Coaches may alter practice days/times.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION ATTIRE

One of the nice things about junior high is being able to dress out for your P.E. class. There are no shower facilities, so remember to take your clothes home to wash, often! You will dress out everyday. You will have your own locker and take care of your own clothes, lock, etc. Be sure to use your lock to secure your clothes! You can purchase P.E. clothes at Horner School anytime during the year. All clothes will be marked during the first week of school with your first and last name. You will need a good pair of tennis shoes that tie (no Vans) and any color of clean socks. Sweats may be used during cold weather and should be white or light gray and will also be marked with your name. Clothing prices are as follows:

Blue shorts - $15
Gray shirt - $15
Sweatshirt - $15
Sweatpants - $15
Horner Logo Backpack - $5
Lock - $5
Heart Monitor strap - $5
(Sweats and strap are optional and locks may be brought from home. Please NO KEY LOCKS.)
LOCKS & LOCKERS

All students need a combination lock to use daily in the locker room. Please NO KEY LOCKS. Master locks will be available for sale ($5) at Horner, or you may bring your own combination lock. STUDENTS ARE REMINDED TO LOCK UP ALL YOUR BELONGINGS WHEN IN PE AND TO SECURE YOUR LOCK WHEN YOU LEAVE. Detention may be assigned for unlocked locks that present a problem. Please be advised that according to the Horner Assignment Book there are to be no spray cans or glass bottles at school. Sunscreen is advised for daily use as are wide brimmed, district approved hats. Deodorant should be of the roll-on type.

LOANERS

Loaners are available in the locker room office on a limited basis for students who forget their clothes. Parents will be notified the first time that loaners are borrowed. (notice is sent home to be signed or phone call is made) The second and third time results in a lunch detention and the fourth and successive times will result in Saturday detention. Students are not allowed to borrow clothes from other students or Saturday detention is assigned. Students may not wear P.E. clothes at school except during the class itself. Parents are notified by the Vice Principal for lunch and Saturday detentions.

ABSENCES

Physical Education is a participation class. It is your responsibility to make up absences and to check with your teacher to make up missed tests. A medical excuse that extends for 3 weeks or beyond results in a drop from the P.E. class and placement in medical P.E. with the Vice Principal. No credit or grade is given for that quarter.

PARTICIPATION EXCUSES

DAILY PARTICIPATION IS REQUIRED! Students who need to be excused from P.E. due to illness or injury need to bring a signed note from home. Female students are not excused from participation during menstruation. After a second consecutive day, a doctor's note or personal call from the parent would be appreciated. Students with a doctor's excuse must dress out unless physically disabled. Missed assignments will need to be made up at a later date. Written work is given when students are on an independent study contract. Students dress and participate but do not do timed runs while fasting. Timed runs and other missed assignments are made up when the fasting time ends.

GRADING POLICY

Students receive 10 points per day for participating in Physical Education class. To receive full credit (10 points for the day), a student must demonstrate the ability to listen, follow directions and participate in the class activity. If students cause a disruption in class, prevent others from learning, are disrespectful in any way or not following directions as explained, they may have points deducted from the total daily points. I look for overall respect, effort, teamwork and the students’ ability to do their very best in class. Students are expected to come to class on time and sit on their number for roll call. Being late to class, or failing to sit on their number may result in a deduction in points for the day.
Coasting, not being willing to try new things, etc. will result in a deduction in points. Extra credit or make-up work will be added to points that have been lost or missed during the week.

The grading scale is as follows:

Percentage Grade

90%-100% A
80%-89.9% B
70%-79.9% C
60%-69.9% D
59.9% or below F

Make-up/Extra Credit Policy

Students are given credit each day they participate in class. Absences, for any reason, result in that student receiving a “0” for that day. It is the students’ responsibility to come talk to me about making up the days they missed at school. However there are a couple of ways students can make up the missed days.
One way to receive one day’s worth of participation points is to write a paper. Each page (double-spaced, 12 point font) is worth one days’ credit for participation. Papers must be in the student’s own words and plagiarism is not acceptable. Students may write about any current sports, health, athletics, or nutrition topic that they desire. They may use the Internet to help them as well. Paper topics may come from any article found in the paper, any story or athletic event witnessed in person or on television. Write about what you saw, how it may relate to what we have done in class, what you liked/ disliked about it, etc.

Office Hours:

I am available to talk to students during lunch or after school for one hour. I do ask that students make an appointment with me so that I know they are coming. This will ensure that I am available to meet with students to discuss any concerns, or questions they may have about the class (such as their grade in the class, etc.).
